Native American Ethnobotany

Working with Native American tribes, we are collecting, recording, and sharing information on their current and historical plant. Learn more from the links below.

Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) – A project completing and publishing Huron Smith’s 1928 work on the plants used by the Ho-Chunk people.

Ute – A collaborative project creating educational information about the plants used by the Ute people.

Arikara

  • Ethnobotany
  • Melvin Gilmore’s work with the Arikara

Osage – We have begun a project with the Osage Nation in recreating their historical ethnobotany, and working also with the National Park Service, to give the tribe access to Pea Ridge National Military Park to harvest persimmons.
